A New Chapter in My Barcelona Journey

After exploring the Gothic Quarter, the beaches, and the colorful streets of Gràcia in my previous articles, this time I wanted something different—something calm, green, and full of history.
That is how I arrived at Parc del Laberint d’Horta, one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of Barcelona.

First Impressions of Parc del Laberint d’Horta

This park is the oldest garden in the city and feels like a dream outside the busy center. You walk through quiet paths, tall cypress trees, and suddenly a real labyrinth appears in front of you. It feels both playful and mysterious.

The air is fresher here, the sounds softer. It’s perfect if you need a break from crowds, especially if you’re visiting Barcelona during high season.

A Park with Movie Magic

Many visitors come because the park was used during the shooting of “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” (2006).
If you saw the movie, you will recognize the romantic and slightly haunting atmosphere. The maze, the terraces, and the classical sculptures created the perfect cinematic background.

Walking there, I suddenly felt like I was stepping into a movie scene myself.

The History Behind This Peaceful Place

Parc del Laberint d’Horta was created in 1791 by Italian architect Domenico Bagutti. It started as a private garden for the powerful Desvalls family.
The design mixes neoclassical style with romantic elements, which you can still feel today when you explore its terraces, fountains, and mythological sculptures.

In the 19th century, more romantic gardens were added, making the park a mix of art, nature, and storytelling—almost like walking through chapters of history.

Finding the Neoclassical Pavilion

One of the most elegant spots is the Neoclassical Pavilion.
It stands like a peaceful temple, decorated with columns and statues that represent classical mythology. This pavilion is perfect for photos, quiet moments, or simply sitting and imagining how aristocrats used to enjoy this same view centuries ago.

Discovering Palau del Marquès d’Alfarràs

At the top of the park you will find the Palau del Marquès d’Alfarràs.
This palace blends Gothic and Moorish influences and is one of the most special structures in the area. Even though it’s not always open to the public, the outside alone is worth the visit. It gives a royal feeling to the whole park and reminds you of how important and wealthy the original owners were.

The Surroundings: More Than a Park

The Horta area is quieter than central Barcelona. Around the park you’ll find:

  • Residential streets with relaxing vibes
  • Local cafés that serve Catalan pastries
  • Natural hills and viewpoints
  • Less touristy restaurants

Curiosities You Should Not Miss

Here are a few interesting details I learned during my visit:

  • The labyrinth is made from trimmed cypress trees and stretches over several paths.
  • Inside the maze you’ll find a statue of Eros, the Greek god of love.
  • The park once hosted royal receptions and high-society events.
  • Water plays a big symbolic role: fountains, small channels, and ponds were designed to represent the journey of life.

Tips for Visiting Parc del Laberint d’Horta

Here are practical tips that will help you plan your visit better:

  • This makes it one of the best budget-friendly activities in Barcelona.

It shows a softer, more romantic side of Barcelona that many travelers never see. If you already enjoyed the busy heart of the city, this park adds balance and a deeper connection with Barcelona’s past.
