The construction of the Sathorn Unique started as the most glimmering addition to the Bangkok skyline, destined to become one of the city’s fanciest residential addresses.

Built to almost 80% during the 90’s everything looks good when in 1997, the Asian economic crisis put a very abrupt end to construction, leaving the city’s swankiest hotel a skeleton. Developers stricken with debt were unable to finish many projects. In the case of Sathorn Unique, the main concrete structure made it all the way to the top.

Left abandoned, it quickly became a hangout for the destitute, and was in the spotlight once more in 2014, after the body of a man who had committed suicide found on the 43rd floor. This combined with the facts that the building stand over a graveyard and casts a shadow on a temple, has led many to claim that it is haunted.

A horror movie based around a fictional suicide in the building, “The Promise,” was released in September 2017.
